The Lucas County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society was established to promote interest in genealogy, and assist genealogists with research through speakers at monthly meetings, articles in the quarterly newsletter, and publication of local records.
Meetings
The Lucas County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society meets the third Saturday of each Month, excluding January and December, at the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, 325 North Michigan Street, Toledo, OH, at 2:00 PM in the Huntington Meeting Room. All meetings are free and open to the public.
About Lucas County
Lucas County is located in northwest Ohio. It was formed from Wood and Sandusky counties on 20 June 1835 and named for the then current governor, Robert Lucas. The county seat is Toledo. The establishment of Lucas County was part of Ohio's response to Michigan in the 'Toledo War', a dispute between Ohio and Michigan about the location of the Ohio—Michigan border.
Research Requests
Our research committee members will perform genealogical research for a nominal fee. Research is limited to the holdings of the Toledo—Lucas County Public Library. See our research page for complete details.
Newsletter
Fort Industry Reflections is the quarterly e-newsletter published by the Lucas County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. Subscription to the newsletter is included with membership and available to fellow Genealogical Societies on an exchange basis.
Fort Industry Reflections contains articles about Lucas County history and the people who helped make that history. It also has updates about Chapter business, meetings, and speakers.
Chapter members are invited to send the surnames they are researching to the editor for publication. Contributions to the newsletter are accepted and printed upon approval of the Editor. Copies of printed issues are available for $.50 per issue plus postage.

Congratulations To Our New Trustees!

Annual elections to our executive board were held at our November 17th meeting. The members present voted to accept the slate of candidates as presented.
The members elected to the executive board for 2013 are: Carol Guzzo, Steve Judd, Sandy McPherson, Carolyn Newman, Bill Priest, Tom Reed, Doug Wiemer, and Sue Wiemer. Congratulations to all. We look forward to another good year.

The Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System

The Civil War Soldier's and Sailor's System is a web site of the National Park Service. It provides a wealth of information that will aid your research into the lives of your civil war ancestors. The website can be accessed at www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/. There are eight main selections to choose from. Which one you pick will depend on what exactly you are researching.
The Selections are: Soldiers, Sailors, Regiments, Prisoners, Cemeteries, Battles, Medals of Honor, and Parks. Soldiers and Sailors selections allow you to search for your ancestor by name. Regiments will allow a search by regiment number and will show a short regimental history and service record. At the bottom of the page you are given a choice to either search for a soldier by name or list all soldiers in the unit.
The Prisoners selection will allow you to search for your union ancestor at Andersonville prison or your confederate ancestor at Fort McHenry prison. The Cemeteries selection will eventually list all the names of all persons buried in the 14 national Park administered national cemeteries. It currently only contains the records of the Poplar Grove National Cemetery at Petersburg National Battlefield near Richmond, VA.
The Medal of Honor selection shows some basic information about medal of honor winners. It can be searched by name. The last selection, Parks, provides a list of civil war related parks administered by the National Park Service.
There is a wealth of civil war information on this site and it can be used in several ways to enhance your research of civil war ancestors. Whether you are trying to determine if your ancestor participated in the civil war or you are trying to build your understanding of your ancestor's role in the war, this site is sure to provide you with some useful information.
